Grading is one of the most over-promised, under-analyzed decisions in the card market. A PSA 10 can multiply a card's value 5x or 50x; a PSA 8 on a high-pop card can sell for less than the raw. The difference between profitable grading and wasted submission fees is math, not vibes. This article gives you the formula and the situations where each side wins.

### The grading fee landscape

Four major graders, each with multiple service tiers. PSA updated its pricing and turnaround times effective February 10, 2026; current rates below.

**PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator).** The market leader by volume.

- Value tier: $32.99 per card, 75 business day turnaround (declared value up to $499)
- Regular tier: $79.99 per card, 25 business day turnaround
- Express tier: $149 per card, 15 business day turnaround (declared value up to $2,999)
- Higher tiers (Super Express, Walk-Through) at $299 and $599 with 7 business day turnarounds

The February 2026 increase added $5 per card to Value Bulk, Value, Value Plus, Value Max, and Regular. Express, Super Express, and Walk-Through were unchanged. Value Plus moved from 40 to 45 business days; turnaround creep is the bigger story than the price creep for most submitters.

**BGS (Beckett Grading Services).**

- Economy: $25-30 per card, 30+ business day turnaround
- Standard: $40-50 per card, shorter turnaround
- BGS dual-grades for centering, corners, edges, and surface, and assigns subgrades, which can drive premium prices on perfect 10s

**SGC (Sportscard Guaranty Corporation).**

- Online: $30 per card, ~10 business day turnaround for sub-$1,500 declared value
- Faster turnaround relative to PSA on average; tuxedo-style flip is increasingly accepted in the market
- Strong for vintage

**CGC Cards.**

- Bulk: $13-19 per card depending on value tier, 35-45 business day turnaround
- Aggressive on price relative to PSA at the bulk tier
- Growing adoption, particularly for non-sport TCG and modern

Add roughly $20-40 for shipping both ways (insured, with signature) regardless of grader.

Fees and turnaround times as of 2026. Verify current rates at each grader's website before submitting; PSA in particular has updated pricing multiple times in recent years.

### The pop report factor

Pop report (population report) tells you how many copies of a card have been graded at each grade level. It is the demand-supply lens for the graded market.

- Low pop + high demand: graded copy commands a premium because supply is constrained
- High pop + commodity card: graded copy trades at marginal premium over raw because supply is abundant

Before you submit, look up the card on the grader's pop report. If there are already 5,000 PSA 10s of a 1989 Donruss common, your PSA 10 is competing with 5,000 listings. If there are 12 PSA 10s of a 2003 Topps Chrome rookie, supply is meaningful.

PSA, BGS, SGC, and CGC each maintain pop reports on their own sites. Cross-reference all four for the full market picture; just because PSA shows low pop does not mean the same card is not sitting heavy in BGS slabs.

### The hold period cost

Money tied up in grading is money not earning anywhere else. PSA Value at 75 business days is roughly 15 weeks, or just under 4 months. Add round-trip shipping and intake processing, and you are closer to 4-5 months from submission to listing.

Opportunity cost math (rough):

- $5,000 in cards submitted to PSA Value
- 4-5 month hold period
- If that capital could earn 6-8% annualized in another reseller's normal turn cycle, the hold cost is $130-170 in foregone profit

Not catastrophic on a $5,000 submission, but it adds up across 50+ cards over a year. The 2026 turnaround times make the hold cost more meaningful than it was at the prior 65-day Value tier.

### The formula

Grading is worth it when:

(Expected graded value - Raw value - Grading fee - Shipping both ways) / Hold period in months = Monthly return

Compare that monthly return to your reseller's typical turn cycle. If your raw card flips average 4-6% per month, the graded play needs to clear that hurdle to justify the capital lock-up.

**Worked example, low pop:**

- 2003 Topps Chrome rookie, raw value $200, expected PSA 10 value $1,800 (low pop), PSA grade rate at 10 ~30%
- Expected value of submission (probability-weighted): 0.30 × $1,800 + 0.40 × $700 (PSA 9) + 0.30 × $300 (PSA 8 or below) = $540 + $280 + $90 = $910
- Net of fees: $910 - $200 raw - $79.99 PSA Regular - $30 shipping = $600
- 4-month hold: $600 / 4 = $150/month return on $200 capital. Submit.

**Worked example, high pop:**

- 1989 Donruss commons, raw value $5, expected PSA 10 value $40 (high pop), PSA grade rate at 10 ~50%
- Expected value: 0.50 × $40 + 0.30 × $15 + 0.20 × $5 = $20 + $4.50 + $1 = $25.50
- Net of fees: $25.50 - $5 raw - $32.99 PSA Value - $20 shipping = -$32.49. Don't submit.

The math doesn't lie. Run it before every submission. With the 2026 fee increases, more borderline submissions tip from "barely worth it" to "not worth it." Tighter pop and value gap requirements going forward.

### When grading makes sense

- Low pop count (under 100 graded copies of the card across all major graders combined)
- High demand player or set (rookies, key vintage, high-end inserts)
- Clear value gap between raw and graded (graded is at least 3x raw at the projected grade)
- Card is already in PSA 9-likely or PSA 10-likely shape (no obvious surface flaws, sharp corners, centered)

### When grading doesn't make sense

- High pop count (1,000+ graded copies)
- Commodity card (most modern base, common parallels)
- Thin margin (graded value less than 2x raw value)
- Card has visible flaws (off-center, edges, surface marks); grade risk is too high
- Capital is needed elsewhere in the next 3-4 months

### Tax treatment of grading fees

Grading fees go on Schedule C Line 27a (Other expenses) with a "Grading & Authentication" subcategory line item. They are deductible in the year paid, regardless of when the card sells.

This is where the §471(c) interaction gets useful.

### The §471(c) interaction

Under the §471(c) small business taxpayer exception (TCJA, codified at IRC §471(c) for taxpayers meeting the §448(c) gross receipts threshold of approximately $31M for 2025, indexed annually), inventory expenses and operational expenses follow the cash method.

What that means for grading:

- You submit 50 cards in November 2025 and pay $1,650 in PSA Value fees ($32.99 × 50)
- The cards don't sell until 2026
- Under §471(c), the $1,650 is deductible on your 2025 Schedule C, the year paid, even though the cards weren't sold yet

Under traditional §471(a) inventory accounting, those grading fees would be capitalized into the COGS of each card and only deductible when the card sells. That timing difference can shift several thousand dollars of deduction between years for an active grader, which directly affects your cash tax liability.

The election is significant for resellers who run heavy grading volume year-end. Make sure your accounting method is on file and applied consistently. If you switch from §471(a) to §471(c), Form 3115 (Application for Change in Accounting Method) is required for the year of change, per Rev. Proc. 2018-40.

### Practical rules

- Run the math on every submission over $50 in fees
- Pop-check before you ship; pop reports change weekly
- Track grading fees by submission batch in your bookkeeping; tie each batch to the cards in inventory
- If you are on §471(c), front-load high-volume grading to year-end so the deduction lands in the current tax year
- If you are on §471(a), grading fees flow into COGS and won't deduct until sale; the timing matters less

### What This Means for You

Grading is a margin amplifier on the right card and a margin destroyer on the wrong one. The decision is mechanical: pop check, expected value math, fee subtraction, hold period return calculation. If the math doesn't clear your typical raw-flip monthly return rate, don't submit. The 2026 PSA fee increases pushed several borderline submissions out of profitability; tighten your filters. On the tax side, grading fees deduct on Line 27a; under §471(c), they deduct in the year paid even if the card hasn't sold yet, which is meaningful for high-volume year-end submitters.
